The gun-toting teen who rushed an unmarked NYPD car, leaving a veteran detective just days from retirement shot by friendly fire, was identified and hit with attempted murdr and a string of other charges. Camani Barletto, 18, was slapped Monday night, July 6, with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of weapons possession, two counts of reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief for the chaotic confrontation that got Detective Robert Karroll shot in Crown Heights Sunday morning, July 5, police said. Karroll a married father of three just 10 days away from retirement was shot in the back around 4:15 a.m. when the crazed teen, of West Orange, New Jersey, allegedly stormed up to an unmarked police car packed with four uniformed cops while brandishing a gun, authorities said. When the suspect flashed his gun in front of the officers, three of the four cops fired, missing the suspect but apparently hitting Karroll. Surveillance footage captured the armed teen chatting with four people outside a Nostrand Avenue deli around 4:05 a.m., just 10 minutes before Karroll was shot. Barletto allegedly then whipped out a 9mm handgun and wildly pointed it at one of the men, ducked inside the store, came back out and fired at a passing Uber that sources said appeared to be his target. Neither the Uber driver nor their passenger was hit, sources said. The teen then crept behind the cops unmarked SUV with his gun visible, moved along the drivers side, and stepped in front of the vehicle, brandishing the weapon, prompting officers to open fire and subsequently shoot Karroll, sources said.

Barletto fled but was nabbed several blocks away, at Union Street and Rogers Avenue, after resisting arrest and having to be tased, officials said. The teen has no prior arrests in New York, but has at least one shoplifting charge in Essex County, NJ.The veteran cop escaped what could have been a fatal wound due to his bulletproof vest, but the patrol car was left peppered with bullets in the wild gunfight. A female cop also suffered minor injuries. Karroll was released from the hospital hours later and is expected to make a full recovery, police said. The post Armed teen involved in NYPD cop shooting identified and charged appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
