A 16-year-old aspiring footballer, Tommy Ballay-Dean, has died after a fire broke out at a home in Southwark, with another teenager left in a coma following the incident.Emergency services were called to the property, where firefighters brought the blaze under control after nearly two hours. Tommy, known as Junior, was pronounced dead at the scene.His friend, Shauny Halsey, also 16, sustained severe facial injuries and life-threatening burns. He was taken to Kings College Hospital before being placed in an induced coma and later transferred to a specialist facility, where he is expected to undergo multiple procedures.The two teenagers had reportedly just returned from the shops when the fire broke out. Early reports suggest the blaze may have been linked to an electric bike battery, although the exact cause remains under investigation.In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said the incident is not currently being treated as suspicious, adding that officers are working alongside the London Fire Brigade to determine the circumstances.Tommy was described by his coach, Dean Stanhope, as a talented and dedicated young footballer with ambitions of going professional. He was loved by everyone and he would walk into a room and light it up, he said. He loved football like it was his whole life his focus was to make it as a footballer.Tommy attended St Thomas the Apostle School in Peckham and had played for several grassroots teams. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from the local community, with supporters rallying around his family and raising funds in his memory.The fire also destroyed Shaunys family home, leaving relatives displaced, while a separate fundraiser has been launched to support their recovery.
