The Edo State Police Command has arrested Benin-based TikTok content creator, Osarobo Omoyemen popularly known as Madam Oil Rice for allegedly staging her own kidnap just to boost her social media engagement. The 24-year-old was picked up over the weekend and, according to police, confessed during interrogation that the entire incident was orchestrated for online attention, Leadership reported. Police PRO, CPS Moses Yamu, released a statement warning the public against spreading false information capable of causing panic or undermining security efforts in the state. According to the statement, Madam Oil Rice had posted a video claiming she was kidnapped along Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later rescued by police officers who allegedly detained her at Akpata Police Station and collected 10,000 as bail. The Command immediately launched an investigation, and findings showed the story was completely fabricated. Police say the suspect admitted she staged the incident purely to generate content and attract more followers to her TikTok page. Investigators also discovered she deleted an earlier video where an accomplice in the background begged viewers to follow her page, exposing the motive behind the false alarm. The police described the act as misleading and capable of inciting hostility against law enforcement and causing unnecessary tension in the state. Omoyemen has since been arrested and charged to court on Thursday, November 20, 2025. Police say efforts are underway to track down her accomplices so they can also face prosecution. According to the Command, the arrest is meant to serve as a deterrent to others attempting to misuse social media to create panic or disrupt public peace.
